
Why we use Carbon Fiber and Quartz for IR Heating
We build our infrared emitters by tucking carbon fiber filaments inside high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because when you’re dealing with extreme heat, the usual stuff just doesn’t cut it. If you’ve used tungsten coils, you know they tend to sag or warp once things get hot. Carbon fiber doesn’t do that. It stays put. This means your heat stays exactly where it’s supposed to be, consistently, across the whole tube. The magic is in the materials Think of the quartz glass as a protective shield. It keeps everything sealed and lets the short-wave and medium-wave radiation fly right through without getting trapped. And the carbon fiber? It’s incredibly fast. We’re talking almost instant heat. Instead of waiting around for the air to warm up, you get a concentrated hit of energy that goes straight into your workpiece. It’s efficient. No wasted energy, no waiting. A few things to keep in mind When you’re wiring these into your setup, the quartz handles the electrical insulation for you. But here’s a tip: be careful with your mounting brackets. Quartz is a bit of a contradiction. It can handle a lot of pressure, but it’s brittle. If you create a “pinch point” or put too much tension on the glass, it’ll snap. Also, while these tubes can take a beating thermally, swinging from 800°C back to room temperature over and over will eventually wear them down. If you want your tubes to last, try to ramp the temperature down gradually. Your equipment will thank you. Where this actually helps You’ll see these used most often for things like PET blowing, curing resins, or drying industrial coatings. It’s that “deep dive” heat that penetrates materials much better than a standard convection heater ever could. The only real downside is that you’re dealing with glass. It’s fragile. While the carbon fiber inside is rock solid, a stray piece of debris or a clumsy bump can crack the tube. If you’re running these on a busy production line with people moving around, just put a shield around the lamps. It’s a simple fix that saves you from a lot of headaches.
