
A Real-World Look at Carbon Fiber Infrared Heaters
If you’ve used old-school metal coil heaters, you know the drill. They take forever to warm up and can feel a bit sluggish. Carbon fiber lamps are a different beast. We wrap a carbon fiber filament inside a quartz glass tube, which lets us push way more heat into a smaller space. The best part? They hit their top temperature almost instantly. Getting the Power Right Here is the thing about wattage and voltage: it’s all about how much “punch” you need. If you’re doing something like PET blowing or curing plastics, you can’t wait around. You need an intense blast of heat right now. But be careful with your power supply. If you push too much voltage through that filament, you’ll fry the carbon structure. It’s a quick way to kill a perfectly good lamp. Just make sure your power matches the specs, or you’ll be replacing tubes a lot more often than you’d like. The Build and the Connections We stick with high-purity quartz because it lets the infrared light pass through without getting blocked. Depending on what you’re doing, some of our tubes have special coatings to tweak the heat or keep the filament clean from gunk in the air. When it comes to wiring, we usually go with R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re the gold standard for a reason. They stay put and can handle the metal expanding and contracting as the lamp heats up and cools down. One quick tip: if you’re swapping these into an old machine, double-check the sockets. A loose fit is a nightmare. It causes arcing, and before you know it, your housings are melting. A Few Things to Watch Out For These lamps are powerhouses, but they’re fragile. Seriously. That quartz glass can’t take a hit or a lot of shaking, so make sure your mounting brackets are rock solid. And since these things put out so much heat, don’t forget about your cooling. If your fans or heat sinks are too small, the heat builds up around the ends of the lamp. If that happens, you’ll melt your connector seals, and then you’ve got a real problem on your hands.
