Let’s Talk Carbon Infrared Heating Tubes

Forget those old-school metal filaments. We’ve moved on to carbon. By wrapping carbon fiber around a quartz sleeve, we can really concentrate the heat. The result? These things heat up way faster and dig deeper into your materials than a standard quartz lamp ever could. Getting the power right When you’re picking a tube, it’s all about the balance between wattage and length. If you cram a 2000W tube into a tiny 300mm housing, that surface temperature is going to skyrocket. It’s intense. And please, double-check your power supply. Your voltage needs to be spot on. If you undervolt, your heat gets patchy. Overvolt it? You’ll fry that carbon filament in a matter of hours. Not a great way to spend a Tuesday. The build and the bits The quartz sleeve is there for one reason: to keep the carbon core from oxidizing. We sometimes add special coatings to tweak the wavelength. You’ll want shortwave if you’re doing quick surface curing, or medium-wave if you need the heat to soak in deeper. As for the plugs, we stick with R7s or SK15 bases. They’re basically drop-in replacements for most industrial heaters. They fit tight, which is exactly what you want. It stops that nasty arcing at the terminals when you’re pulling a lot of current. The real-world stuff You’ll see these all over the place—PET bottle blowing, drying automotive paint, you name it. The best part is the response time. They kick in instantly, so you aren’t wasting energy (or money) idling around. But look, there’s a catch. Carbon tubes are a bit more delicate than those chunky metal-sheathed heaters. One clumsy bump during installation and crack—there goes your quartz. Also, keep them clean. Seriously. Dust and oil buildup create hot spots, and that’s how the glass fails early. Oh, and use high-temp leads for your wiring. You don’t want your insulation melting right next to the terminals.
