Let’s Talk About Custom Carbon Fiber Heating Lamps
Most people think of those old-school tungsten filaments when they think of heat lamps. But carbon fiber is a different beast. We take a carbon-fiber core and seal it inside a quartz envelope. The result? Short-wave infrared radiation that hits your target fast. It doesn’t just get hot; it gets hoteverywhereacross the lamp, so you aren’t dealing with weird cold spots.
Getting the Power Right
Here is the thing about wattage and voltage: they control the “punch” of the heat. If you cram a lot of wattage into a short tube, you get an intense blast of heat density. But you have to be careful. Your power supply needs to be a perfect match. If you push too much voltage, you’ll fry the carbon filament in no time. On the flip side, if you under-power it, your materials just won’t reach the temperature they need to work. It’s a balancing act.
The Shell and the Plugs
That quartz tube isn’t just for show—it keeps the carbon fiber from oxidizing and burning out. Depending on what you’re heating, we can add different coatings. Some help you hit a specific wavelength, while others bounce the heat right back onto your workpiece. For the plugs, we stick with R7s or SK15 connectors. Why? Because they just work. When a lamp eventually goes, you can swap it out in seconds without having to rip apart your entire wiring setup.
Real-World Advice
You’ll see these lamps all over the place in PET blowing and plastic curing because they ramp up so quickly. It saves a ton of time on the factory floor. But a word of caution: all that heat has to go somewhere. Make sure your housing and cooling fans can actually handle the temperature climb, or you’re asking for trouble. Also, keep your reflectors clean. If they’re dusty or crooked, the heat misses the mark and the lamp starts to overheat. And one last thing—while we build these to survive a rough factory environment, quartz is still glass. It’s brittle. Tighten down those mounting brackets so vibrations don’t snap your lamps.
