
Let’s Talk Carbon Fiber Shortwave Infrared Lamps
If you’ve ever dealt with standard metal coils, you know the drill. They take forever to warm up and waste a lot of energy. Carbon fiber lamps are a different beast. We tuck a carbon filament inside a quartz tube to push out shortwave infrared (SWIR) radiation. The magic here is that they don’t need to get scorching hot to work. They just shoot heat straight into your materials. It’s fast. Really fast. You don’t have to wait for the whole machine to “soak” in heat before you start seeing results.
Getting the Power Right
We build these lamps to fit your specific setup. If you’ve got a tight footprint but need a ton of heat, going with a high-voltage setup (like 230V or 400V) is the way to go. It lets us cram more wattage into a shorter tube without frying your wiring. But a word of caution: don’t go overboard with the wattage if your housing can’t handle it. You’ll end up overheating your reflectors. Just double-check that your cooling fans can keep up with the heat rise.
The Build and the Bits
We use high-purity quartz glass because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature jumps up and down. It handles that thermal shock like a pro. Most of our lamps use R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re simple, secure, and usually just slide right into most industrial ovens without any fuss. Some of our units also come with a gold or ceramic coating. This is a neat trick that pushes the heat directly onto your workpiece. It stops the machine frame from soaking up energy it doesn’t need.
Where They Shine (and Where to Be Careful)
You’ll see these all over the place—PET blowing, powder coating, automotive paint curing. The surface hits the target temperature in seconds, which means your cycle times drop drastically. Your workflow just feels smoother. Here’s the catch, though. Quartz is fragile. If your shop floor is a high-vibration zone or things tend to get bumped around, these tubes can snap. Make sure you mount them tight. If they shake loose, you’re looking at a burnt-out filament and a lot of downtime.
