A No-Nonsense Guide to Carbon Fiber Infrared Bulbs
If you’ve ever looked at a carbon fiber infrared bulb, it basically looks like a high-end light bulb. But inside, it’s a different beast. Instead of those old-school metal coils, we use a carbon filament tucked inside a quartz tube. The real magic is in how it moves heat. It hits that medium-wave spectrum, meaning it doesn’t just warm the air—it pushes heat directly into whatever you’re working on.
Getting the Power Right
Here is the thing about wattage: you can’t just cram a ton of power into a tiny bulb. If the bulb is too short for the wattage, the heat density spikes. Sure, it’ll get hot fast. But it also puts a massive amount of stress on the quartz seals. It’s a trade-off. Also, keep a close eye on your power supply. Carbon filaments are picky. One bad voltage spike and snap—your bulb is toast. Keep it stable, and you’ll be fine.
What’s Under the Hood?
The heart of the bulb is a woven carbon fiber filament. We seal it in high-purity quartz because if oxygen touches that filament, it’ll oxidize and break almost immediately. Some of our bulbs have a reflective coating on the back. Think of it like a mirror that bounces all that IR energy forward. It basically doubles the heat hitting your workpiece. As for installation, we use R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re standard. You can just pop a new one in without having to tear apart your entire heater bank. It’s simple.
The Real-World Stuff
These things are a dream for PET blowing and curing plastics. They sink into the material quickly, which saves you a lot of time. But a word of warning:carbon fiber is fragile. If your machine shakes or vibrates while it’s running, that filament can snap. Make sure your mounts are rock solid. One last tip: if you’re pushing a lot of heat, your cooling fans are going to have to work overtime. If the electronics around the bulb get too hot, the lamp won’t last nearly as long. Just balance your thermal load and you’re good to go.
